Like Ideal Body Weight, Body Mass Index, or BMI, is another popular measure used to see how fit you are in comparison to commonly accepted standards. BMI is used as a quick estimate for body fat based on your height and weight. It can be used to assign a person to a weight category like Overweight or Obese.
Body Mass Index is a popular measure among many medical experts because other body fat indicators are expensive and difficult to do. I know what you’re thinking… What does BMI have to do with my abs? If you’re just starting out on the road to getting six pack abs, the first step that is often recommended is to reduce your body fat percentage. As I have mentioned before, your body fat percentage needs to be around 10% to reveal your six pack abs.
Even if you do 1,000 crunches a day, you will not be able to see the results of your hard work without first decreasing your body fat. Burning body fat and building muscle can be accomplished through high impact cardio and improved eating habits.
If you have a lot of weight to lose, you can use the BMI calculator as an estimate of your body fat until you get down to the normal range. At that point, you can occasionally check your BMI using the BMI calculator or go to a local gym or doctor’s office for a more accurate measure.
Also, remember that BMI may not be a good measure for you if you are undergoing intense weight training. Muscle weighs more than fat, and athletes with a lot of muscle mass like NFL players may be considered obese despite their low body fat percentage.
Don’t be discouraged if your body fat percentage is high. Also, keep in mind that women tend to trend higher in body fat percentage and BMI calculations because they are built to store more fat than men.
You should not stress yourself out about weighing and measuring yourself. How you feel and how your clothes fit is much more important than getting caught up in the numbers!
